— The What:
Title: Fixing the Forgotten - Japan
Logline: A group of hosts travel across Japan rescuing akiya (abandoned) properties and turning them into cafes, artist residences, and community spaces. All the while, they showcase the cultural stories behind these houses and towns and foster rural communities.
Comps: Queer Eye meets Fixer Upper
Why You: While I (Vio) was living in Japan, I found out that a lot of houses in Japan are abandoned, and I met people who flip these for a living. For example, one of my friends had a hard time finding rentals in Japan and ended up flipping some akiyas and turning them into artist residencies in rural communities. I went to one of these new akiya communities and loved how they showcased a different lifestyle compared to the city and how they were able to revitalize these rural communities.
Production Company High Noon Entertainment: produced Fixer Upper and other HGTV hits like Unsellable Houses and Farmhouse Fixer. Katie Neff (SVP of Development). Strong experience in renovation shows and experimenting with format. Could position this as “Fixer Upper: Japan” Scout Productions: produced Queer Eye and other niche communities or culturally resonant stories. Renata Lombardo (SVP of Development & Unscripted).
Back-up idea We can do a scripted, more documentary-style series about akiya flippers and how they got into this and how they make aesthetic and financial decisions.
