Case Studies
The list below represents inspiring work that attempts to solve specific problems for specific communities. They are grouped by three primary strategies:
- COMMUNICATE: Changing the conversation on an issue by correcting misinformation or raising awareness of an issue
- FACILITATE: Removing the friction in an existing process system or tool to make change achievable
- REINVENT: Creating a new tool, process or system that changes how we solve a problem or address a need.
Please post an analysis of one case study from each of the three categories (communicate, facilitate, reinvent) in your group slides. By doing this, you are conducting our first UX research method: Best practice audit.
COMMUNICATION-FOCUSED CASE STUDIES
Health Misperceptions Promulgated by Inaccurate Photography (photos)
- Problem: Much of the imagery typically used to illustrate vaccine information, in everything from news stories to resources published by the medical community is inaccurate and misleading.
- Solution: the American Academy of Pediatrics teamed up with SELF magazine and photographer Heather Hazzan to create a collection of downright joyous, medically accurate, royalty-free photos for anyone to use when writing or promoting vaccinations
The Tampon Book (book, campaign)
- Problem: In Germany, tampons are subject to the top tax rate category of 19%, which is higher than many luxury goods, such as caviar and oil paintings.
- Solution: Sell tampons packaged in a book at a lower tax rate (7%). The book also includes 45 pages of illustrations on topics of mensuration, taboos, and feminism.
- Results: It kicked off national debate, generated international awareness, and Germany finally lowered tampon tax to 7%.
Palau Pledge (campaign)
Intro video
- Problem: Mass tourism threatens the fragile environment of Palau, the world's 13th smallest nation.
- Solution: "The Palau Pledge, created to unify action to protect Palau’s environment, mandates all visitors sign an environmental oath - stamped inside passports - before they can legally enter the country. It's a formal promise to Palau's children to protect their future."
