Course description

Recognizing patterns is how we make sense of the world. It is this that distinguishes signal from noise, sense from senselessness, and one feeling from another.

This class investigates the emotional impact of patterns in our lives, computational techniques in crafting patterns, and ways in which these patterns can be translated into experiences that can be felt. We will play with our brains’ trained pattern recognition mechanisms such as time, grid systems and musical patterns.

The goal of the class is for students to create experiences which will heighten the sense of awareness of patterns using computation or computational concepts. Students will (1) Seriously notice and absorb the patterns in their lives: see them, hear them, feel them, describe them and document them (2) Abstract the experience and learn to program patterns using various computational techniques (3) Design experiences for their midterm and final projects relating to patterns (see details in the next section).

Students will be encouraged to think about the context of presenting their projects i.e. physically setting up their projects outside of a laptop screen environment or designing specific made-for-screen experiences.

Pre-requisites: Introduction to Computational Media (ICM) or the equivalent.
